London Through Time

A first impression I got from London is the mixture of both History, and modern culture that resides in one city. It is full of fashion and trends, but also castles and Royalty. The history of this place is one of innovation, great ideas, and success. The last couple days I have had the pleasure of visiting a few of London’s amazing museums, and have been able to explore the past that has made this present city, and country, so great.

The National Portrait Gallery was one of my visits yesterday and I was impressed just how far back the detailed lives of monarchs and royalty was recorded. Looking at the stoic faces of people who shaped this country hundreds of years ago, makes one think about the policies and decisions made today that will still be felt hundreds of years from now. Reading of Henry VIII starting the Church of England so he could get divorced was probably gossip and scandal then, but think of the implications it had on history and religion in this country. The gallery went from the Tudors, to the current Windsors, ending with my favorite painting of Prince William and Prince Henry, just trying to be boys in the craziness of royal life and expectations.

I also went to the British Museum. A building that seemed to never stop, with artifacts reaching back to thousands of years BC lining the walls of the giant display rooms. Learning of humanities’ past and seeing how far we have come is truly amazing. We have acquired so much knowledge and it’s important to remember where we came from and how we got here, I’m glad the english have such a respect for history and a drive to keep it alive.

The last piece of history we visited was the famous Abbey Road Studio. This is no where near as old as either of the two museums I visited, but the respect and awe of the building was just the same. To walk across the street knowing my feet were in the same spot as Paul, John, George, and Ringo was awesome. It was such a symbol of British pride and I’m so happy I got the chance to see it and put my signature on the wall outside.

British History goes so far into the past. It has shaped the world and helped advance mankind. From monarchs, to rockstars, this Island has produced innovators, dreamers, and heroes. And I don’t see it slowing down any time soon.
